All about Hampshire Road Club

The Hampshire Road Club has been the home to cyclists along the South Coast between Portsmouth and Chichester since 1928 when the Club was formed. The growing sport of "Time Trialling" was the major reason for starting a new Club. Since then the Hampshire Road Club has grown steadily broadening its interests to cover a wide spectrum of cycling and social activities.

The Club will promote 22 Club time trials during 2008 with distances varying from 10 to 50 miles on a mixture of flat, hilly and undulating courses.

10 mile time trials are a good introduction to beginners in the sport of cycle racing. The club promotes 10 mile events every Tuesday evening throughout the Spring and Summer between Funtington and Chichester. New cyclists are always welcome to 'come and try', with no obligation to join the club.

The season started with a 2-up Team Time Trial in late February at Funtington and will end with an Inter Hill Climb on the Downs at Goodwood in November.

An 'Open' 10mile Time Trial will be promoted which attracts riders from all over Southern England with cash prizes and trophies to the winners of the various categories.

Members participate in Track Racing at Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth, Road Racing in the BCF Wessex area and in Surrey league events.

Randonees are often run, the first in March over 50km and 100km with riders cycling through Hampshire & West Sussex areas. October will see the 'Seven Hills of Goodwood' Randonnee for those who enjoy the hard work and satisfaction of climbing hills. Both events are great fun and encourage slower riders to enter club events.
Clubruns are popular from November to March with members meeting at a variety of starts around the  Emsworth and Rowlands Castle area on Sunday mornings.

The Annual President's Ride is a special clubrun held once a year for all calibre cyclists and ends in a feast of home made food.

Clubnights are held every Monday evening in Emsworth through the Autumn and Winter, members a chance to discuss their past achievements, disappointments and future plans. It also gives new members a chance to come and find out about the club.

The Social side is vital to keep a Club running and the Hampshire Road Club takes this task seriously. For example the Annual Luncheon & Prizegiving Presentation and Christmas Party in December, Skittles Evenings at country pubs, Clubroom Slide Shows,  the Summer picnic at Sidlesham etc. Club members also attended other local Clubs social activities.
Members are kept informed of what is going on by the publication of the monthly 'Newsletter' and the 'Annual Handbook', not to mention this website!. We pat ourselves on the back for the success of these methods of communicating and giving full details of results, future races and social events.

Club members compete in all distances, this is our 24 and 12 hour champion.

Having seen what the Hampshire Road Club will organise in 2008, none of this can be achieved without so many experienced and willing members to volunteer and organise a wide variety of events.
